Bend Park and Recreation needs more referees for its youth basketball program.
With the area’s continued growth, the district has 100 more boys and girls signed up this year, than last, taking the total number of third fourth and fifth grade basketball players to 840.
“We’re real excited to have so many kids playing basketball,” says Rich Ekman, Bend Park and Recreation District’s Sports Program Coordinator, “But, with that growth comes some challenges and that’s the need for volunteer coaches, practice space and officials to officiate games.”
He says the most common refs are high school players, but the paid position is open to anyone with basketball knowledge.
They expect to have 84 teams play 42 games every Saturday from January to March.
Prospective referees must attend a pre-season meeting on Monday, January sixth, at 7 p.m. at the District Office, 799 SW Columbia St.
