The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office has identified the hiker who died Saturday at Smith Rock State Park as 35-year-old Chaitanya Sathe of Hillsboro.
Sgt. James McLaughlin said a 35-year-old man died after a fall on the Crooked River Gorge Trail about 9:40 a.m.
Dispatched received a call then that a man fell about 100 feet near the access to Lower Gorge at the park. The investigation revealed the man was making his way down a climber’s path toward the northeast Lower Gorge when he tripped and fell.
Redmond Fire, four DCSO deputies and 12 members of the DCSO Search and Rescue team responded. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Search and Rescue teams recovered the man Saturday afternoon at 2:30.
