Summit Student Balances Football and National Guard

He was out for the first three games of the season but Jeremiah McCray is back on the field at Summit High School, just in time for homecoming. However the senior defensive end has been busy for good reason, he was at basic training in Georgia as part of the National Guard.

Match Up: Madras vs. La Pine

An old football rivalry is being renewed tonight. The Madras High School White Buffaloes are in La Pine to play the Hawks in a 3A match up. Both teams started their season in spectacular fashion and both hope to keep the early season momentum alive. Parents across the country have been pulling their kids out of football leagues after recent studies showing the dangers of head injuries caused by hard tackles. Summit High School in Bend is hoping to protect their players and save the sport they love by trying out some new helmets that could help coaches keep their players safe on the field.

Death of College Football Player Brings Safety Concerns to Forefront

A University of Maine football player died after collapsing on the field during the first practice of his freshman year. The incident has put the spotlight back on safety for players across the sport.

Central Oregon Daily’s Eric Lindstrom got a chance to talk to a local high school coach about how this tragedy and this summer’s heat and haze are affecting his football team.

So far this summer the Madras High School football team has had six days of full practices and at least three of those days, including today, have been spent inside because of the air quality.

It’s that time of the year where student athletes all over Central Oregon are getting ready to make one of the biggest decisions of their lives – where to go to college.
Central Oregon Daily’s Anyssa Bohanan caught up with one of the most heavily-recruited football players in Bend, Mountain View High School’s Riley Straly, to see how he is weighing his options.
Riley says he is hoping to make a decision by the end of the week and as soon as he does, we will let all of you know so you know which team to root for this Fall!

Top-Ranked Teams in 5A and 3A Win Big on Friday Night

Mountain View High School and La Pine High School showed why they are ranked number one in the state in their respective classes with impressive wins on Friday night.

The Cougars scored 48 unanswered points to kickoff the first half of their Homecoming Night on their way to a 62-6 victory over the Ridgeview Ravens to prove their record to 7-0 on the season in 5A play. Meanwhile, the Hawks went on the road to Harrisburg and beat the Eagles 34-15 to improve their record to 7-0 in 3A play.

When Monday’s OSAA state rankings came out, both Mountain View and La Pine were ranked #1 in their respective classes.

In other Central Oregon high school football action, Summit High School kept their playoff hopes alive with a 31-17 Homecoming victory over Redmond. Bend lost a close one on the road in Hermiston 35-32. In 4A play, the Sisters Outlaws beat Elmira 28-7.

Battle of Two Undefeated Teams in La Pine Tonight

The La Pine High School Hawks head into their homecoming game with a perfect 5-0 record as they host the perennial powerhouse of the Mountain Valley Conference, Coquille, in a battle of two undefeated teams on Friday night.

Central Oregon Daily’s Eric Lindstrom spent time on the practice field with the Hawks this week as they try to break their three-year losing streak against the Red Devils.

Mountain View High School Fights to Hold Undefeated Title

The Mountain View High School Cougars are the only 5A school left in Central Oregon with an undefeated record, and tonight, they’re facing the Hermiston High School Bulldogs at home.

Central Oregon Daily’s Anyssa Bohanan caught up with the team as they prepared for the big game, and met the largest player on the field who also packs the biggest punch.

COTV Sports Player of the Game: Dawson Ruhl of Summit High School 11/6/15

One of the unsung heroes of Summit’s memorable season, Dawson Ruhl rushed for a team high 149 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the host Storm to its first post-season football victory in school history, a 59-14 triumph over South Albany.
For his efforts, the junior running back earned COTV’s Player of the Game honors. Included in his three touchdown runs was a highlight film 40-yard effort in which he changed directions several times and broke seven tackle attempts.
Ruhl leads the Storm rushing attack with 773 yards for the 2015 season.
Summit will travel to Redmond for a 2nd round class 5A OSAA State Championship football game next Friday.
