Fatal Shooting North of Bend

An investigation into a fatal shooting north of Bend on Wednesday afternoon is ongoing.

Just after 11 a.m. Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported shooting near the intersection of McGrath Road and Casa Court. Nearby residents were warned to stay inside their homes and lock their doors as Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, K9 units, drone operator and officers from Oregon State Police, Bend Police and Redmond Police searched the scene.

Officers found a woman lying in the street and life saving efforts were attempted but 58-year-old Valerie A. Peterson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Around 12:40 the Sheriff’s Office reported that they had a suspect in custody and that there was no longer a threat to the community.

As of 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a press release from the Sheriff’s Office specified that the person of interest in the shooting was still in custody, but had been taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.

The Sheriff’s Office has not released any information on what occurred before the shooting, but said that the investigation was ongoing.

No Charges for Deputy Involved in Shooting

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel announced that he would not pursue any criminal charges against the deputy who was involved in a shooting in October.

In a press conference on Friday, Hummel said the decision by Deschutes County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Jones to shoot Brandon Berrett as he attempted to flee officers was authorized by Oregon law. According to Hummel, his investigation into the October 12th incident yielded evidence that Barrett was driving a vehicle in a way that was a danger to the officers involved and the general public.

A Deschutes County Grand Jury returned an Indictment charging Barrett with Escape in the First Degree, Reckless Driving, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Driving While Suspended, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, Driving under the Influence of Intoxicants, and Interfering with a Peace Officer.  His first court hearing will be on December 10, 2018. 

 On Friday Hummel’s office also released this statement:

 “Brandon Berrett’s decision to attempt to escape from sheriff’s deputies who were attempting to arrest him constituted a crime.  However, the mere fact of committing a crime should never, standing alone, result in a person being shot by law enforcement.  Mr. Berrett’s decision to drive a car in a dangerous manner toward Deputy Jones and his ride along, Corrections Deputy Lewis, is what resulted in shots being fired.  Fortunately for all involved, Deputy Jones and Corrections Deputy Lewis were unharmed, and Brandon Berrett, while shot, survived and is recovering.”  

However, during his press conference Hummel did say that he had some concerns about the decisions made by the officers on the scene prior to the shooting. Deschutes County Sheriff L. Shane Nelson said the department would be conducting their own investigation of the situation and adjusting officer training accordingly.

At the time of the press conference deputy Jones was still on paid leave, which is standard procedure after an officer involved shooting. The other officers who were on the scene but did not fire their weapons were working as normal.

That was the situation on Friday when the Redmond Police Department – OR, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Oregonand other first responders held a Mass Casualty Drill at Obsidian Middle School.

New Officer Helps Crack Down on Illegal Grows

Law enforcement has intercepted $48 million in black market marijuana headed out of Oregon and here in Deschutes County local law enforcement is trying to crack down on illegal grows. The Deschutes County Commissioners recently approved the hiring of a new officer to help in those efforts.

Arson Case Leads to Animal Abuse Investigation

The investigation into a fire at a historic home in downtown Bend has taken a turn. The initial investigation into the fire lead police to 47-year-old Bend resident Wesley Brady. Court documents from that investigation revealed incidents of alleged animal abuse found on Brady’s property in the Deschutes River Woods – which are now subject to another investigation.

Escaped Inmates Captured

Two inmates escaped from the Deschutes County Sheriff Rescue Ranch south of Bend today. The inmates, who were trained and given permission to use an ATV for work purposes, made an attempted to escape. However, both were eventually apprehended near Lava Butte.
