Oregon Teams Advance to Sweet 16

The Oregon State University women’s basketball team made history on Sunday in their game against Tennessee.

Tennessee had never lost in the tournament on their home floor and they were 57 and 0 coming into the matchup, but they can kiss that record goodbye.

The Beavers took them down, shocking the Vols 66 to 59.

The crazy thing about the matchup was three of Tennessee’s best players are from Oregon and played basketball at Oregon high schools. Five years ago the number one high school recruit in the nation was Mercedes Russell out of Springfield and she choose to take her talents to Tennessee. Jaime Nared and Evina Westbrook followed suit in the following years.

That gave Tennessee three starters from Oregon and the Oregon girls showed out. Russell led the way with 21 and 14 but it wasn’t enough. The Beavers overcame an earlier deficit and clawed out a 7-point victory. The Beavers were led once again by senior Marie Gulich who put up 14 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks.

OSU now marches on to the Sweet 16 for the third straight year where they will face 2-seed Baylor in Lexington, Kentucky on Friday.

The Beaver’s aren’t the only Oregon team moving on. The University of Oregon Lady Ducks got off to a fast start against 10 seed Minnesota and never looked back.

Led by sophomore guard Sabrina Ionescu with 29 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds, the NCAA’s all time leader in triple doubles almost messed around and got another. Fellow sophomore Ruthy Hebard added 22 and 10 and the Ducks were up by as many as 34 before clearing the bench. They finished with a 101 to 73 victory.

The Ducks will now head to Spokane, Washington where they will face Central Michigan the 11 seed on Saturday.
