Raid prompts call to OSP Bomb Squad; La Pine man arrested on drug, explosives charges

A La Pine man was arrested on drug and explosives charges Wednesday after a raid on his house led to the deployment of the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

DSCO Street Crimes detectives conducted a search warrant at a home in the 51300 block of Huntington Road and found evidence of the use and sales of methamphetamine and a BHO lab.

Detectives had been investigating 29-year-old Sunny Penny-Dunn III for the sale of controlled substances in Deschutes County.

During the search of the home, Sgt. Doug Sullivan said detectives also found an explosive, which prompted the deployment of the OSP Bomb Squad.

During the removal and safe destruction of the device, three neighboring apartments were evacuated for several hours.

Detectives also found several thousand dollars of stolen satellite/dish equipment, Sullivan said.

Sunny Penny-Dunn III, 29, was arrested taken to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Jail where he was booked on several charges including unlawful delivery of meth, unlawful manufacture of an explosive device, unlawful possession of an explosive device and first-degree theft.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad Unit and the FBI Bomb Squad Unit.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes unit focuses enforcement on street-level drug cases and quality of life issues connected to property crimes throughout Deschutes County.
