Popular Costco sheet cakes the latest COVID casualty

First the free samples.

Now the sheet cakes.

The wholesaler has stopped offering the popular party cakes, steering folks to their 10″ round cakes instead.

In Facebook posts promoting graduation cakes last month, the store noted that the half sheet cakes were no longer available.

“To help limit personal contact and create more space for social distancing, Costco has reduced service in some departments,” the store responded on Facebook to people asking about the cakes. “At this time, we are not making sheet cakes for special order.”

Fans on Facebook were quick to voice their displeasure, recounting family events where the cakes were big hits and calling the move “disheartening.”

Someone even started up a Change.org petition to bring back the half-sheet cakes. (It currently has 38 signatures.)

The Kirkland, Wash.-based company has made several COVID-related moves in previous months including requiring masks in stores.

And while they eliminated free samples at the outset of the coronavirus outbreak, some locations are beginning to bring them back.
