A pedestrian was struck by a car and killed, Friday morning, near the northern edge of Bend, just north of Cooley Road.
According to Bend Police, it was still dark out and the man was wearing dark clothing when he crossed from east to west in an area with no crosswalks, traffic signals or streetlights. The victim was hit by a northbound station wagon, just after 6:30 a.m., and pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as 32-year-old Micheal Powell, a local transient.
Investigators believe Powell was struck by a southbound vehicle after the initial impact, however the second driver did not remain at the scene. The driver of the station wagon immediately stopped and called 9-1-1, remaining at the scene to talk with police. Speed is not considered a factor; no citations were issued.
Travel on Highway 97 was reduced to one lane in each direction for about two hours, tying up traffic during much of the morning commute. The highway fully reopened just before 9 a.m.
