Oregon State Police say a Bend man fell asleep at the wheel Tuesday afternoon when he crashed his utility truck into a power pole on Highway 20 east of Bend.
OSP said 34-year-old Jacob Scott Johannes was driving west on Highway 20 just outside of Bend when he crossed into the eastbound lane and drove off the north shoulder of the highway. The truck struck the pole and rolled over, but Johannes was uninjured. The crash closed both lanes of the highway for about 30 minutes. Traffic was open to one lane for about two hours.
The crash destroyed the power pole, sparked and caught a tree on fire. About 500 Central Oregon Electric Cooperative customers near Dodds Road were without power about four hours until crews repaired the damage.
Johannes told OSP he fell asleep while driving and was issued a citation for failing to drive within his lane.
