A 55-year-old Madras man was hit by a car Monday night as he crossed Highway 97 on the north side of town, according to police.
Madras Police Detective Sgt. Steve Webb said the accident happened about 6 p.m. as three men were walking to the the Madras Warming Shelter near Highway 97 and Chesnut Road. Officers said a white Buick was driving north when the driver noticed a man walking on the east side of the road and then saw another man run into the road in front of him.
Webb said officers spoke with the two men who were with the man who was struck and they both said they did not think it was safe for the him to walk across the street. One of the men told police, “he just walked right out in front of them.”
EMS took the man to St. Charles in Madras where he remained on Tuesday afternoon in critical but stable condition.
Webb said based on statements from the other men involved, alcohol might have been a factor in the man crossing the street.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the man has been and continues to be cooperative in this investigation and once all information is obtained reports will be forwarded to the Jefferson County District Attorney for review, Webb said.
