The Life and Legacy of Lawrence ‘Red’ Zufelt (1927-2017)

  |

Bend has lost one of its Band of Brothers. Lawrence ‘Red’ Zufelt passed away on Wednesday, August 9 at the age of 90.

He served in the Navy during World War II and was close enough to see the mushroom cloud from the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, and then he was on the battleship Missouri 27 days later when the Japanese surrendered. “Red” stayed in the Navy and served through the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

He left high school to serve in the war, so in 2014, he was awarded an honorary degree at Bend High School. A graveside ceremony will be held with full military honors on Wednesday, August 16, at Pilot Butte Ceremony at one o’clock in the afternoon.
