Deschutes County Search and Rescue volunteers Sunday afternoon helped an injured hiker off the Broken Top Trail near No Name Lake.
Asst. SAR Coordinator, Deputy Josh Wewstfell said dispatch received a call at 3:05 p.m. regarding a woman who had fallen and injured herself while descending the trail. The hiker, 74-year-old Mary Ortmann of Surprise, Ariz., suffered serious but not life-threatening injures.
A Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office deputy was able to make phone contact with someone in Ortmann’s party to monitor her status and help coordinate SAR’s response. Ortmann’s party then began a careful descent to help expedite the process of getting her to medics.
Eighteen SAR volunteers met Ortmann part way up the Broken Top trail that leads to No Name Lake about 5:15 p.m. and treated her on the scene. She was then taken via wheeled litter down to the Broken Top trailhead where she was met with a SAR vehicle who drove her to the Todd Lake Trailhead.
There, a Bend Fire and Rescue ambulance was waiting to take her to St. Charles in Bend where she was treated and released.
