Hiker injured after accidentally shooting himself

A Redmond man hiking and scouting mountain bike trails Sunday afternoon accidentally shot himself in the leg, requiring a rescue effort to help him out of the area.

Deschutes County Sheriff Lt. Mike Biondi said the accident happened around 1:30 on Buckhorn Road northwest of Redmond. Chris Mills was hiking with his friend, 24-year-old Chad Gatley, on BLM land near a motorcycle riding area. Gatley had been scouting in a ravine and was climbing back out when his .40-caliber pistol dislodged from the holster and fired one round, hitting him in the lower leg.

Several Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Redmond Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene.  GPS coordinates showed Gatley was on top of a butte, about 3/4 of a mile east of Buckhorn Road.

After finding Gatley, Redmond Fire paramedics began treating him and deputies assisted paramedics in helping Gatley down the butte via a wheeled litter to a waiting ambulance.  Gatley was taken to St. Charles in Bend with serious injuries.
