Smokey Bear is turning 75 and only YOU can prevent him from celebrating alone.
The iconic U.S. Forest Service messenger urging folks to prevent forest fires officially celebrates his birthday today, but the party is happening on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cascades Welcome Station on Century Drive.
The Deschutes National Forest and Discover Your Forest are hosting the kids-focused celebration which will include cake, pictures with Smokey, art activities and more.
The Welcome Station is located just past Seventh Mountain Resort on the Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway. It’s a gateway to some of the most popular hiking and biking trails and lakes on the Deschutes National Forest. You can pick up recreation passes, local maps, guidebooks and other educational materials at the facility. You can also park there to access the Phil’s and Wanoga mountain bike trails systems.
According to Smokey’s website, the Smokey Bear Wildfire Prevention campaign is the longest-running public service advertising campaign in U.S. history, educating generations of Americans about their role in preventing wildfires.
