The annual “Be a Santa to a Senior” program is drastically different this year.
Gone are Home Instead’s trees with tags, where volunteers provide gifts for older Central Oregonians who might not otherwise get one.
Instead, virtual lists are available on Amazon, which can then be shipped directly to the residential facility where staff will wrap and deliver them.
“Doing that prevents anybody outside the facility, besides the mail carrier, from handling that gift and adds a lot of layers of protection for that senior,” said Gloria Rockwell, Home Instead Bend.
Rockwell admit it’s tough for volunteers who look forward to shopping and wrapping presents each year.
But, she says the change was necessary to protect the seniors at high risk of getting sick from COVID.
