A Bend man running across the Parkway was struck and killed by a semi Saturday, according to police.
Sgt. Tommy Russell said the incident happened around 7:15 night near the Hawthorne Avenue exit.
Officers responded and provided medical aid to the pedestrian, who was unconscious. Bend Fire & Rescue paramedics also responded and took the man to the hospital where he later died.
The pedestrian was identified as 42-year-old Marlow White.
The driver of the truck, a 56-year-old man from Alaska, remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators, Russell said.
According to several people interviewed at the scene, White tried to run eastbound across Highway 97, starting from the west side of the road.
The truck driver saw this and tried to stop, turning into the adjacent southbound lane to avoid the collision, but the 2017 Volvo truck he was driving struck White.
White was not in a crosswalk or pedestrian crossing area of the roadway at the time of the collision, Russell said.
The Bend Police Department was assisted with traffic control and road closures by the Oregon Department of Transportation Incident Response Team and the City of Bend Public Works Division.
The investigation was aided by the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office and the Deschutes County Medical Examiner’s Office.
