▶️ Bend man arrested for uploading child porn; volunteered with BHS swim team

A 20-year-old Bend man who volunteered with the Bend High girls swim team, was arrested this week for uploading more than two dozen pictures and videos depicting child porn, police said.

Detectives with the Bend Police Department on Tuesday received information from the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force regarding a Bend resident that uploaded, over the past six months, at least 27 images/videos showing children engaged in explicit sex acts.

Sgt. Robert Jones said through the investigation, detectives identified the suspect as 20-year-old Wyatt Anthony Carrell.

Tuesday afternoon, officers and detectives with the Bend Police Department contacted Carrell during a traffic stop at NE Purcell Boulevard and NE Highway 20 in Bend. Carrell was arrested and taken to the Bend Police Department. Later that night, officers and detectives with the Bend Police Department executed a search warrant at 20325 Sonata Way and another search warrant on his vehicle, a 2001 Toyota Avalon, which was secured at the traffic stop location, Jones said.

Evidence was seized during the search warrants and Carrell was taken to the Deschutes County Jail where he was booked on 27 counts of first-degree encouraging child sex abuse and one count of criminal possession of a forgery device.

Jones said no other occupants of the residence are believed to be involved in the crimes.

Julianne Repman, Director of Safety and Communication at Bend-La Pine Schools, confirmed Carrell was a volunteer with the Bend High girls swim team, and “it sounds like he attended a handful of practices. He did pass a background check.

We talked to a student from the swim team on Thursday afternoon. She asked to remain anonymous.

“I would say he was at about every practice and he coached the kids who didn’t really know how to swim,” the girl said.  “The only memory that I have that really stands out is when we were at a pasta feed and we were playing a get to know you game and he joined in that game which the other coach didn’t, which was a little strange to me.”

She said it was odd the way Carrell tried to “implement himself into our lives sort of.”

“A lot of the, at least my friends, got a little bit of a creepy vibe from him,” she said.

According to his online resume, he also was a swim instructor and lifeguard at the SHARC aquatics center in Sunriver.

Thursday afternoon, the facility released a statement:

“Yesterday, the Sunriver Owners Association was notified that Wyatt Anthony Carrell, who had been a lifeguard and swim instructor at SHARC, was arrested for uploading child pornography to the Internet. Carrell is no longer an employee of SROA.

At this point, the charges do not appear to involve activity related to Carrell’s employment with SROA. However, we have actively reached out to the Sunriver Police Department and the Bend Police Department and will provide full support for and cooperation in any investigation. We ask that any members of the public with information related to this case or other cases please contact the Bend Police Department at 541-693-6991.

Community members can stay up to date on this through local media resources. We will also provide periodic community updates as information becomes available. As a reminder, our entire community can work together to keep kids safe. If you have information concerning the safety of a child in our community please contact the Oregon Department of Human Services child abuse and neglect hotline at 1-855-503-7233.”

While he did have access to local children as a coach, it’s unknown if any of the pictures are of local children.
