90-year-old Redmond man celebrates birthday the only way he knows how – by giving back

Redmond resident George Honnell celebrated his 90th birthday by doing what he’s done every Tuesday for the past eight years, volunteering at Bethlehem Inn.

There, Honnell packs lunches with another volunteer. In the old facility, Honnell says, making just 30 sandwiches was an adventure. In the new facility, things go a bit more smoothly.

“We knock out 60 in about an hour and a half,” said Honnell. We’ve got a system down now.”

Retired for more than 30 years, Honnell volunteers at least two or three times a week at various organizations.

“I keep moving so they can’t get a straight shot at me,” said Honnell.

Despite Honnell’s diminishing eyesight slowing him down a bit these days, he says there’s nothing that suggests he should stop just yet and he plans to keep volunteering as long as he can.

“I think you get a lot of personal satisfaction out of volunteering, said Honnell, “You also get humbled a bit, and that’s always good for us.”
