Graduation season is full of proud parents and plenty of traditions.
But the Mt. View High School ceremony on Saturday had a unique moment that will stand out among all the pomp and circumstance.
For the first time, a bilingual address was given by a graduate as senior Abril Castañeda gave welcoming remarks to her 296 classmates in Spanish.
It might have been a first, but Castañeda hopes it was not the last.
“I really want it to become a tradition, not just for this year, but later on in the future,” she said. “I think it would really make a difference and think it would be an amazing thing.”
Abril said she had never spoken to a group that big before.
She will attend Portland State University in the fall.
