Elementary Students Get an Up Close and Personal Look at Fish Habitat

The kokanee salmon is one of Oregon’s most prolific game fish. The key to their health and population growth is the ecosystem along the Deschutes River and it’s tributaries like the Metolius River. Every year, a group of 4th and 5th graders from Central Oregon get a firsthand look at the spawning and habitat of the salmon at the annual Kokanee Karnival.

Central Oregon Daily was there as the students from Ponderosa Elementary put on the waders to learn about the many forms of life living in and around a river.
