Community Rallies Around Bend Boy Injured in Car Wreck

On Thursday ten-year-old Avryn Hayes was on his way to school, heading southbound on the parkway, when a truck going northbound jumped over the median and into the car in which Avryn was riding. Avryn was flown by helicopter to the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland. Avryn’s mom, Asheley Martino, and her boyfriend Jared Garcia, who was driving the car at the time of the accident, have been at Avryn’s side for the past week. Central Oregon Daily’s Curtis Vogel got a chance to talk to Asheley today in Portland.

Asheley said Avryn regains consciousness for brief periods of time every day, but he is still dealing with a broken leg and severe head trauma.

While Avryn recovers the family’s medical bills are mounting because of the transport involved and the catastrophic nature of the injuries. However, the community has stepped up to raise money for Avryn. Efforts include a GoFundMe page that is nearly at $20,000 as of Wednesday night. Dutch Bros donated a dollar from every drink bought at their Bend locations yesterday and raised $12,500 for Avryn’s fund.

If you want to help the family there is another fundraiser tomorrow at Longboard Louie‘s eastside location in Bend. The restaurant is donating all of their profits for the day to Avryn.

Tomorrow at 6 pm Anyssa Bohanan will have more of our conversation with Avryn’s mom about the accident and what’s expected to be a long road to recovery.
